Sometimes people forget tattoos aren’t just momentary, but rather permanent installations on the gallery known as your skin. And considering the seriously long term commitment they require, people seem to put relatively little effort and thought into them in a lot of cases. This next series of photos shows 25 examples of how tattoos look months and even years after they’re first done. Many of them are faded or blurry and colors can disappear almost entirely.

It turns out that there are a number of reasons for the deterioration of tattoos. First of all, the type of ink used to do the tattoo in the first place – the better the quality of the ink, the longer the tattoo will last. Also, it turns out, color matters. Lighter colors tend to fade faster and even disappear altogether over time. In addition, the location of the tattoo on your body matters – tattoos on areas that are regularly exposed to large amounts of direct sunlight, like your fingers, definitely fade faster.

But no biggie, right? In the worst case scenario, these people can get the remnants of their body art lasered off, right? Well, it’s not that easy. Before you head out to get inked yourself, it’s important to remember that tattoos can be removed completely in just 20% of cases. In 80% of cases, a scar remains. In addition, it cost about four times as much to remove a tattoo than to get one in the first place. The moral of the story? Think before you ink.
