When you look at Gesine Marwedel’s canvases for the first time, it can be easy to see nothing other than standard illustrations of animals and landscapes. But if you let your gaze dwell for a few more seconds, you just might notice familiar shapes buried in the images – ridges and curves. Upon closer examination, you just mind find an arm, a leg or even a face. That’s because each and every one of her works of art is painted right on a person.

The talented German artist even stars in some of her own painting, serving as her own canvas for self-expression. While she is just 25 years old, her work has already become world-famous and selected pieces have appeared in galleries around the world.

In some of her projects, Marwedel turns her subjects into animals, such as a seahorse, a lizard, a flamingo or a penguin, while in others, she uses body paint to create unbelievable optical illusions like that of a person torn in two, or a stunning desert landscape.

We’ve collected a few of our favorites from her collection for your viewing pleasure and we highly recommend that you check out more of her stuff on her website (link at the end of the post). Enjoy!
