Yawning is definitely one of the more bizarre phenomenons in nature. Scientists have yet to settle on the precise reason we yawn, but they have proven beyond a doubt that it’s contagious. It turns out that yawning isn’t just infectious from person to person, it crisscrosses the animal kingdom. Ever noticed that when you yawn, your dog yawns too? But wait, there’s more. Scientists also found that just saying the word “yawn” makes people yawn. How crazy is that??

The science behind yawning is pretty straight forward – when we get tired, our breathing slows down. This lowers the level of oxygen in our blood and raises the level of CO2. Yawning is a reflex that brings in new air while getting rid of the CO2. Other scientists have suggested that yawning plays a role in regulating body temperature.

So why is yawning contagious? The reason is pretty simple – yawning is the most basic form of showing empathy. For that reason, a stranger’s yawn has less of an effect than your partner’s. Pretty cool, right?

In this gallery, originally published by BoredPanda, you can see a range of adorable animals getting ready for nap time. Cats, dogs, birds, owls, foxes and plenty of others, all captured in an all-too-human moment of sleepiness or plain old boredom. And here’s an interesting fact: The only mammals that don’t yawn? Giraffes. Maybe there’s more oxygen two storeys up.
